Kanye West won a Grammy Award for the song American Boy with London born Estelle. Kanye and Estelle posed through a uninspired live version of American Boy. A more Latin flavored version of American Boy was also released to iTunes this year by the group The Latin Sun.

Lil Wayne was the biggest winner this year. The New Orleans native won four awards including Best Rap Album for Tha Carter III, Best Rap Solo Performance with A Milli, Best Rap Song with Lollipop and as a featured artist in the Best Rap Performance by Duo or Group in Swagga Like Us. He had several of the year’s top Hip Hop songs. These are the rapper’s first Grammy awards for his own album.
Lil Wayne revealed his secret identity, during Katie Couric’s pre-grammy interview, as a highly intelligent, slightly nerdy bowler who wears glasses. However, his bowling skills were questionable after throwing a few gutter balls. He blamed it on the ball like a carpenter who builds a shabby house and says he had a bad hammer. I guess you can’t win them all. I’ll take four Grammy Awards over a stupid bowling trophy any day. Plus, he still got his swagga.
Jay Z rapped with Coldplay’s lead singer Chris Martin during the song Lost. Hey, did anyone else see Jay Z gesture toward the Coldplay singer when he said "Judas". Chris Martin’s wife Gwyneth Paltrow watched her husband with pride from the audience.
Queen Latifah announced the highlight of the evening introducing M.I.A., Lil Wayne, Jay-Z, T.I. and Kanye West. M.I.A. was due to deliver her baby that very day and she looked as though she was ready to give birth right on stage. The rap quintet tried to outperform each other during a high-energy mashup of Paper Planes and Swagga Like Us.
Rihanna and boyfriend Chris Brown were suspiciously missing from the awards. Turns out Chris Brown allegedly injured Rihanna and was arrested for Domestic Violence.
